H. H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi and India’s Freedom Struggle!

H H Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi was born in 1923, at noon on the 21st of March in Chindawara in the center of India, in a Christian family of noble descent.

She was born at a very crucial moment of history. The world was still reeling back from the aftermath of the First World War and the grey clouds of the Second World War were already looming over the horizon.  Mother India was crying under the British tyranny.
Her birth was to mark a new epoch in the Freedom struggle of Mother India!

Her Parents
Her father, Parsad Rao Salve was a successful lawyer and a master of fourteen languages.  Well versed in the arts, literature and science, he also translated the Koran into Hindi.  He became a prominent freedom fighter and he later became the only Christian member of the Central Legislative Assembly.
Her Mother, Cornelia, was the first woman in India to receive an Honours degree in mathematics.

Her relationship to Mahatma Gandhi
Her deep spiritual insights, special qualities and understanding were recognised at an early age by Mahatma Gandhi.  As a result of this bond they shared, Shri Mataji spent much of her time in Gandhiji’s ashram.

Her Words about Mahatma Gandhi
"He used to call me 'Nepali' because My face is a Nepali face.  And he used to talk to me as if he is talking to his grandmother sometimes."
“Gandhiji was very strict – the way he used to make everyone get up at four in the morning, have your bath, come for puja.  But his qualities was that what he said, he practiced, there was no hypocrisy about it: also he used to get into temper with people who would misbehave and I used to put some cool water on him; Because I was a little girl, he would really understand it and he used to say ‘how is it you keep so peaceful about all such things?’ I said, ‘that’s the solution; Reaction is not the way we can really work it out; forgiving itself solves the problem.”

India’s Freedom Struggle
Young Nirmala bore the full brunt of the freedom struggle.  From 1928 Her parents were regularly in prison.  They had made a rule that no one was to shed tears on their departure for the jail, as this would be demeaning.  Their parents taught the children to share joy and grief alike.  There were no dual standards between the society and the home.  Though open minded, the children were brought up traditionally.  There was no question of superficiality or compromise.  In the absence of Her parents, young Nirmala shouldered the domestic responsibilities, from the age of ten.

‘Quit India Movement’
As a young woman she too, joined the struggle for India’s Independence.  In 1942 she spearheaded the student struggle for freedom in the ‘Quit India Movement’ and was often imprisoned.
Her attention was always on the benevolence of other.  On one occasion the British put her on ice to torture her, but it in no way dampened her indomitable spirit.

She was rusticated from Medical College and could not complete her studies.
The veteran freedom fighter Vinobha Bhave tried to dissuade her from participating in the freedom struggle, but her father warned her to pay no heed to the old man’s advice.

When the police came to curb the striking students she stood boldly, alone guarding the gate, shouting the freedom slogan and facing the barrels of the guns.

The principal of the college was witnessing this scene in amazement and realised her great Shakti.

Her heart was in the country’s freedom struggle
Her heart would wrench with pain as she would helplessly watch the atrocities of the British tyranny.  Her soul would go out to the martyrs and Her torn heart would express its anguish in tender songs:
Glory to Mother India,
Victory to thee
The whole universe resounds with thy name

Even the green pastures of your villages sing thy praise
When my eyes are filled with tears
And my throat is choked with grief,
My heart is crying out for thy victory.
The smoke from the martyr’s pyre rises to meet the sky
Even there his spirit hails thy glory.
Victory to Thee!
Victory to Thee!

The method of meditation through self-realisation developed by Shri Mataji was called  Sahaja
Yoga.  Shri Mataji toured throughout Europe, Australia, and North America continuously in the 1980’s, teaching this method free of charge to all who were interested.  The 1990’s saw her travels spreading to South America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and Pacific region.

Despite relentless travelling, Shri Mataji never referred to her demanding schedule as tiresome, equating it rather with the work of a loving mother looking after her children’s well being.

Shri Mataji was born in India to a Christian family on March 21, 1923 - a descendant of an Indian royal family.  Her father, a lawyer, was a member of India's first parliament. "You cannot know the meaning of your life until you are connected to the power that has created you"
"There can be no peace in this world until there is peace within"

"The quality of human beings is only one and that is how much they
love and forgive"
"Love is the main thing.  When there is love there is energy, there is patience and there is wisdom.  love has to be there first"

What is Self Realisation?

"Self Realisation is actually the first encounter with Reality"

True 'Self Realisation' can only, really be attained through the 'Awakening of the Divine Mothering Energy', that lies dormant in the base of the spine, secretly hidden in the sacrum bone.

Self Realisation has always been the ultimate goal of all religions and spiritual traditions of the world, but was extremely difficult to attain in the past.
It has now become a mass phenomenon achieved effortlessly through Sahaja Yoga, which is Shri Mataji's invaluable gift to humanity.

Shri Mataji discovered a spontaneous method to awaken the Kundalini and this is the foundation of Sahaja Yoga Meditation.

In the past, the awakening of this inner spiritual energy was achieved by only a few individuals, through arduous efforts of purification, asceticism, and prolonged meditation.

Shri Mataji's discovery of awakening the Kundalini requires no previous knowledge or spiritual practice.  The spontaneous awakening can be passed on to others, without the necessity of paying money, acquiring a diploma or becoming a disciple.
"Like a candle that is lit can light another candle.”

Self Realisation through Sahaja Yoga - has been introduced in corporations (through the Center for Evolutionary Learning), schools (through the Health Corps and other programs), hospitals and prisons, with positive, documented results. (SELF-REALISATION' is the name given to this AWAKENING).

How Does This Happen?
Within every human being there is a Motherly and Soothing Spiritual Energy lying dormant at the base of the spine in the triangular sacrum bone, in three and a half coils - (The Greeks were aware that the bone they called hieron osteon (sacred bone or sacrum) carried within it a 'sacred' energy which lead to the Pneuma or Spirit).

Once this extraordinary benevolent, nurturing energy is awakened, it passes upwards through the nerve plexuses, along the spine inside the spinal cord, and passes through all the chakras or energy centers in our subtle system before coming out of the head at the fontanel bone area, opening the "Sahasrara" the last center (on top of our heads).
This is how one achieves 'Yoga or Union' with the source of all.
One can feel this energy as a 'cool breeze' above the head, as well as in the palms of the hands.
This Mothering Energy that lies within every human being has been called by many names in the different traditions. The Hindus called this energy Kundalini Shakti, the Greeks referred to this energy as "Pneuma". Islam speaks of "Ruh", and Jesus Christ called it "The Holy Spirit".  In Jewish mysticism it was called as "Shekina" and long time before that, the Sumerians worshipped the Mother Goddess Inanna, which gives spiritual birth and the sacred breath. Several thousands of years ago, "Chaitanya" in India.  "The Self", translated as "Divine Vibrations " in Sahaja Yoga.

Why is it necessary to Awaken or connect with this Mothering Energy that lies within?
Well, this energy, (sustained through the practice of Sahaja Yoga meditation), has a curative and balancing effect on our system.  It also facilitates a restorative state known as 'Thoughtless Awareness', in which the mind is in a state of rest or sleep or tranquility and yet perfectly aware.

What makes Sahaja Yoga meditation different from other techniques is that this state of 'Thoughtless awareness happens spontaneously and without effort'.Because of its simplicity and accessibility, hundreds of thousands of people have received their self-realisation through Sahaja Yoga, with meditation centers in over 130 countries offering permanently free courses and community support to practitioners of this simple, yet vital meditation.

The experience of self-realisation through Sahaja Yoga offers significant benefits
to those who dedicate even a small amount of time to daily meditation.
  • It reduces stress and fatigue,
  • restores emotional balance,and
  • gives one a sense of peace and satisfaction even in the turbulent of circumstances.
  • and more...

WHAT IS SAHAJA YOGA MEDITATION

Sahaja Yoga Meditation is a unique experience which brings us naturally into a 'State of Enlightened Mental Silence' in which conflict dissolves in the
dimension of Inner Peace

What is Sahaja Yoga Meditation
Meditation is a scientifically proven way of improving our well-being in general.  Millions of people today in the world are using this ancient discipline for many purposes including stress management, health improvements, motivation and success in business, education etc.
Man is slowly realising and accepting that, deep within every human being is to be found an untapped source of 'Inner Peace'. This explains why more and more people are saying 'go within', 'meditate', 'take time out', 'quiet time' and many more commonly used phrases.

This 'peace within' is actually - 'Energy' of Pure Love.
(It is a very scientific concept).
Since pure love has no boundaries it is unconditional.  It can be likened to the love a mother has and gives her child.
It is unconditional and spontaneous.

This ‘Energy’ (a Mothering energy) within emits vibrations.  As we know everything in creation emits vibrations.  This is how we are able to recognize or identify it with our senses – only through its vibrations (it emits) that is: - its colour, texture, feel, sound and smell.
Through this source of energy an inner transformation takes place and in turn, it is possible to live in this hectic world coping with all competition, capabilities, constraints, responsibilities and still feel peaceful, stay in good health, enjoy beautiful and loving relationships.

This technique is actively practiced in over 130 countries around the world, and is an effective solution to the physical, mental and emotional problems of the modern times.  This technique has demonstrated positive results in several research areas including health, education, agriculture, relationships, communication etc.   It is currently being used in many schools overseas, with much success in combating the many problems we – the human race is experiencing.

The Qualities and Purpose of Meditation
  • A gentle inner transformation which develops the awareness of the connection to all things.
  • This awareness dissolves the sense of ‘Us and Them’ which so often results in clashes and dissent both individually and collectively.
  • A sense of solidarity, peace and tolerance manifests along with an awareness of the natural laws.
  • In this new awareness the concept of diversity or difference is erased. Everything, whether it is a living being, a rock, a tree or an amoeba, is recognized as part and parcel of the whole.
The Benefits of Sahaja Yoga Meditation (to list a few)
  • Stress relief/stress management
  • Improved attention, memory, concentration and studies
  • help in the development of creative skills and talent
  • improved self esteem
  • improved communication skills
  • stronger positive sense of integration with others

About Sahaja Yoga

“Sahaja” (Sanskrit word), which means
'spontaneous' and also 'born with',
“Yoga” means 'union with God'.

Sahaja Yoga is actively practiced in over  130 countries around the world and is an effective solution to the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical problems of the modern times.  Sahaja Yoga Meditation has demonstrated positive results in several research areas including health, education, agriculture, etc.

“Whatever is inborn would manifest without any effort.
Hence, “Sahaja Yoga” is the name given to my system, which is
effortless, easy and spontaneous.
It is natural to Nature
(you may call it life’s source, vitality of Divine).”

                                                    -H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi-

Introduction
Since time immemorial human beings have been in search of truth, God, life, nature and all that could give an understanding of the origin, cause, reason, purpose and the end objective of life.
To know thyself and thy creation has been the key to the quest in all ages and times.  This quest has given birth to various schools of thought: philosophy, literature, science etc.

Sahaja Yoga is an ancient system of yoga and can therefore be termed as
‘the divine path for emancipation of freedom from all bondage’.

What is Sahaja Yoga Meditation?
A brief overview..

Within each of us, there is a Mothering energy, known for centuries as the key to spiritual enlightenment. It lies dormant, coiled in the Sacrum bone at the base of the spine.  It is called Kundalini, meaning feminine coiled energy.

When awakened, we feel a gentle cool fountain of energy above the top of the head and cool vibrations on the hands. Sometimes a warm energy is felt as the Kundalini encounters friction in its path - however this will clear to cool vibrations.

The awakened Kundalini connects us with our Spirit and the universal love that surrounds and pervades everywhere.  This 'union of our Spirit with the Divine energy is the true Yoga event' (yoga means 'union') and gives us our 'Self Realisation'.

Through the efforts of Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, all who desire can now awaken their Kundalini spontaneously.  With attention in the cool flow of energy above the head, we go into 'Thoughtless Awareness'.

With simple short daily practice we quickly experience the peace, joy and other amazing benefits that this meditation brings.
